February 20, 2006 Meeting

• Council welcomed Mr. Bill Appleby, President of Music Nova Scotia, to the meeting. Mr. Appleby made a presentation which included information about the Export Development Program and Export Development Ready Program; the Bringin’ It Home program and how Music Nova Scotia has coordinated it around the 2006 JUNO Awards; the Makin Music project in Cape Breton and how Music Nova Scotia plans to expand the program throughout Nova Scotia; and the benefits of Music Nova Scotia and partnering with Brookes Diamond Productions to produce DRUM!.

• The Awareness/Outreach Task Group circulated a draft report on event planning ideas for the proposed Culture sector conference and awards event. The conference will provide an education opportunity for the sector while the awards event will recognize exceptional contributions to the provincial arts scene. Both aspects of the event will raise the profile of the arts and culture community among the general public, and within the sector itself.

January 8, 2006 Meeting

• A letter from Don Julien was circulated advising of his resignation from the Council due to time constraints.

• Council was updated on the process for moving Council’s Culture Plan report forward and formally thanked all council members and divisional staff for their work done on the document.

• The Chair presented a report on the endowment fund and the use of the investment return. It was proposed that the principle to be kept intact and the interest on the investment to be used for funding arts and culture scholarships or awards.

November 25, 2005 Meeting

• Terry Kelly and Jenni Blackmore reported on their attendance at the TIANS conference. It was suggested that Council work with TIANS to communicate culture ideas for next year’s conference.

• A letter from Laura McNutt was circulated advising her resignation from the Council due to work pressures.

• Council congratulated Marcel McKeough on his promotion to Director, Culture Programs and his successful completion of the Master of Public Administration program.

October 23, 2005 Meeting

• NSACPC representatives on the Joint Culture and Tourism Partnership Sub-Committee are working together to tie together culture and tourism.

• Council recommended that Terry Kelly and Jenni Blackmore attend the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia conference as Council representatives in November 2005.

• Council was updated on the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) Culture Strategy including: the huge amount of public feedback they received, that HRM staff attended the Province’s culture focus group sessions and that staff had met with HRM officials to discuss the provincial goals and how both levels of government could work together to grow culture.

September 23, 2005 Meeting

• The Council members were thanked for participating in the Culture Plan focus group sessions.

• The Chair discussed the importance of the content of the culture plan. Ten recommendations were put forth for discussion.

• The following cultural events were discussed: the JUNOs in Halifax in April 2006; the Country Music Awards and the ECMAs will be held in Halifax in 2007; and 2007 is the Year of the Craft.

February 27, 2005 Meeting

• The Governance Task Group met with governance consultant Veronica McNeil from Voluntary Sector Consultants. The task group was exploring what training was available for Nova Scotian boards interested in governance.

• The Resource Task Force met with representatives of the Seamark, the investment company managing Nova Scotia Arts Endowment Fund. There was a discussion of the fund balance, history of the fund, the long term investment strategy and the potential use of the funds.

• The Education Task Group explored connections between the arts, arts education and business and partnerships with the Dept of Education, Dept. of Tourism, Culture and Heritage and schools. A meeting with Eric Favaro of the Dept of Education was planned to discuss this matter further.

• Members discussed the need to prepare a development plan for the Culture Sector which would identify priority areas for culture sector development. It was decided that a draft plan outline be prepared for discussion at the next council meeting.

• Job descriptions for council members were approved.
