Council Meeting News

June 2, 2006
The Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council (NSACPC) recently completed a recruitment process and announced new members. Members were chosen by a sector-led Nominating Committee based on applications submitted from a public call to apply to the Council. New members attended their first meeting at the NSACPC Annual General Meeting in June 2006.

Four new members and three returning members have been appointed to the Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council.

The four new members are:

•Jim Morrow of Port Williams who has been appointed for three years;

•Shelley Fashan of Lake Echo and Kim Reinhart of Ketch Harbour who have both been appointed for two years;

•Linda Ross of Sable River who has been appointed for one year.

Ted Cavanagh and Donna Wellard have completed their terms, while Joella Folds, Terry Kelly and Wayne MacGillivary have been appointed as returning members for three years.


Meeting Highlights

June 2, 2006 Meeting


• Announcement of new members including: the appointment of Shelley Fashan, Jim Morrow, Linda Ross and Kim Reinhardt new members, as well as the reappointment of Terry Kelly, Wayne MacGillivray and Joella Foulds.

• During this meeting the 3nd Annual General Meeting was also held:
  • The Creative Nova Scotia report was officially accepted by Council.

  • Paul Gallant was re-elected as Chair, Joella Foulds was re-elected as Vice-Chair and Terry Kelly was re-elected as Secretary to the NSACPC Executive.
May 1, 2006 Meeting

• Dr. Ron Stewart, Director of the Medical Humanities program at Dalhousie University, made a presentation entitled Music in Health and Healing: Physician, Heal Thyself, which included:
  • history of medicine, physicians and music, arts and spirituality
  • how medicine is working with literature and arts organizations and music
  • diversity of people coming into the health profession and how they are involved with arts and culture
  • unique role of medicine and the arts
  • life styles and the role of humanity
• The Nomination Committee’s recommendations for the 2006 nominations were circulated in order to fill the seven vacancies on the council. Council discussed the committee’s process to select the candidates.

• The Awareness/Outreach Task Group discussed the culture conference and awards event. Given the logistics surrounding such an event, the idea of hiring an event coordinator to organize the event was discussed. The event is meant to develop, foster and promote an awareness of the value and importance of arts and culture in NS via a conference day and an awards event that highlights and honours the sector’s successes.

March 31, 2006 Meeting

• Council met with the Honourable Judy Streatch, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. The Minister discussed her background and the importance of culture, as well as how culture could be connected to the five government priorities. She also expressed her appreciation for the work of the Council and that she was looking forward to working with the Council and strengthening the Culture sector.

• The Chair welcomed the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage. The Minister discussed her background and the importance of culture. She also discussed the importance of the federal, provincial and partnership councils working together. Minister Oda further expressed her appreciation of the work of the Council and how she was looking forward to working with Minister Streatch and the Council to strengthen the culture sector. Minister Oda further shared her views on a number of issues such as implementing long term stable funding for cultural organizations, and her commitment to the sector.

• The recommendation that the Grand Pre prize be awarded annually and the prize should be raised from $1500 to $2000 was discussed.
