Arts & Culture Awards Gala Coming to Cape Breton

Nova Scotia’s artists and culture workers will be celebrating their best and brightest in Cape Breton next month. On Oct. 18th, the second annual Creative Nova Scotia Awards Gala and Conference will be held at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.

Sponsored by the Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council, more than 300 members of the arts and culture sector from across the province are expected to attend the event

“We feel that Cape Breton is an ideal place to celebrate excellence in the arts, because we are rich in talent and cultural expression here,” says Council chair Paul Gallant of Cheticamp. “We are a provincial organization, so we want to move the event to various areas of the province.” Last year the first annual Awards Gala and Conference was held in Pictou.

The awards gala will feature performers in theatre, dance and several genres of music, primarily from Cape Breton. The Portia White Prize, Nova Scotia’s highest artistic award, will be presented at the gala, as will the Prix Grand Pré. Several new awards will be presented to the province’s top artists in five disciplines and also to the Nova Scotia community that best supports arts and culture.

The Creative Nova Scotia conference, which takes place throughout the day, will explore and celebrate Artistic Connections. With discussion topics ranging from the roles of local and provincial organizations in cultural development to how we are reaching global markets, the conference will encourage discussion on the best ways to strengthen Nova Scotia’s culture sector. Keynote speaker, award winning author, humourist and CBC personality Bill Richardson will address the theme of Artistic Connections. Tickets are available for his lunchtime presentation as well as for the full day conference and gala.

The schedule includes the grand opening of the new Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design. “We are excited about this conference partnership with the Centre”, said Vice Chair  Joella Foulds. “This stunning new facility will contribute significantly to the continued development of Cape Breton's craft and cultural sector. ” Carol Beaton is Executive Director of the Centre. "We are delighted to showcase our wonderful new home as part of the Creative Nova Scotia Conference, a celebration of excellence in the arts. "
